SPECIAL EDUCATION SCHOOL
As a commitment towards mainstreaming those with special needs, MAMC has a special education school on its premises since 1998. The school is dedicated to children with cognitive problems (mild to moderate retardation) such as those due to

• Down syndrome and other chromosomal disorders,
• Metabolic disorders,
• Encephalopathy's due to lack of oxygen, jaundice and meningitis during infancy,
• Head injuries
• Congenital developmental delay and
• Pervasive developmental disorders i.e. autism and childhood disintegrative disorder.

The admission criteria are as follows

• Mild to moderate degree of mental retardation
• Age between 3 to 15 years
• Ability to walk independently or with portable adaptive equipment
• Approval by the MAMC admission committee comprising of a special education specialist, a psychologist and a neurologist. The child has to be evaluated independently by each of the above experts along with an adaptive behavior assessment by the school management prior to admission
• Epilepsy, if present, should be well-controlled to ensure safety of the child and to prevent disruption in the class routines
• The child should preferably be toilet-trained, if possible

The school has a fair number of dedicated special education teachers and assistants in order to maintain an effectively high ratio of teachers for the number of enrolled children. We have both male and female housekeeping staff to help the children with toilet tasks.



The staff at MAMC special education school and our in-house clinical psychologist also offer one-to-one remedial education sessions for children. These are for both children who are already enrolled in the school as well as for those that visit the center as outpatients. The latter include children who may simply be slow learners performing poorly at school or those who have dyslexia, autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In addition, the school children also get occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech therapy sessions if needed.



MAMC has a fleet of vans for the transportation of children that is offered at a nominal rate. A child assistant is present in each van along with the driver to ensure safety and security of the children during pick ups and drop offs.
